Citizen of the Year Lisa Lee

New Bern Civitan Club
Citizen of the Year

Lisa Foley Lee was presented with the Club’s Citizen of the Year Award for her work as a Board Member and volunteer at the Colonial Capital Humane Society (CCHS).  CCHS is a no-kill shelter housing more than 100 rescued animals.  Within the last year, the shelter was nearly closed by the state due to the need for repairs and upgrades to the facility.

She rallied numerous community resources and individuals to help keep the shelter open.  Our Club volunteered many hours to this project by refurbishing buildings and erecting needed new structures.  In the end, CCHS maintained its license from the state and is still open.  Without Lisa’s constant negotiations for materials and volunteers, this vital organization to the Craven county community would have been closed.

Lisa has been an animal advocate and CCHS volunteer for many years.  She was also instrumental in shining light on the dog tethering laws in Craven.  These laws were recently modified for the better benefit of dogs and Lisa worked tirelessly to rally support for the changes to the ordinance.  “Our organization provides a voice for the creatures who cannot speak for themselves,” she said.  Recently, after being a guest speaker at the New Bern HS Junior Civitan Club, she has recruited many members to work at the shelter and at outreach adoption celebrations.

In addition to her volunteer work, Lisa has a dog sitting business in her home.  She often takes in strays that cannot be housed at the Animal Shelter due to lack of room.

She is a very busy lady who always makes time for family and friends.  Lisa is the daughter of one of our Civitan members, Steve Foley, and his wife Sharon.  Her proud parents were at the banquet to see her receive this award.

For these reasons and more, we are delighted to make Lisa Foley Lee our Citizen of the Year - 2017.
