We’re excited to share the Craven County Pre-K and Family Literacy Program will continue for the 2025–2026 school year. Nearly 400 four-year-olds— about 300 of them in New Bern — will have the chance to attend preschool, giving them a strong foundation for future learning.
To qualify, children must meet specific criteria such as developmental delays, physical disabilities, limited English skills, or living below the poverty line. And unlike older students, Pre-K kids are NOT included in the Stuff the Bus program, which makes community donations especially important.
Since 2016, we’ve supported these children and their families by collecting essential school supplies. This year, we’re doing it again — and we’re asking our community to pitch in.
We’ll be accepting donations throughout July. We’ll also gladly accept monetary donations or we can arrange to pick up the items.
What’s Needed:
- Backpacks (14–15 inch)
Plain, store-brand backpacks are perfect — and more affordable! - Lap blankets or beach towels
Used for naps and quiet time at school. - One-subject spiral notebooks
For adults enrolled in the Family Literacy Program. - Pocket folders with pockets
These help teachers send important info home to families.
Did you know? Many of these items — like backpacks and blankets — are shared across siblings or reused if they’re still in good condition. But after a year or two, they wear out, especially when used by busy four-year-olds. That’s why we need a steady supply each year.
Thanks to some generous donations, we’ve already been able to order 72 backpacks and received 84 lap blankets, but we still need more to cover every child.
Don’t Have Time to Shop?
We’ve got you covered. Club members Judy Lopez or Maureen Comer can shop on your behalf. A monetary donation of just $72 can purchase a case of 24 backpacks online.
This program supports families who are often living below the poverty line and facing real hardships. Your kindness makes a big difference.
