Join the Team That’s Changing Lives One Ramp at a Time!

One of the most life-changing things we do at the New Bern Civitan Club is build handicap ramps for people who can’t safely enter or leave their homes. These ramps aren’t just wood and nails — they’re freedom, dignity, and peace of mind.

In recent years, we’ve been building around 25 ramps each year across Craven County for folks who are recovering from strokes, living with disabilities, healing from surgery, or simply aging into new challenges. These ramps help them get to doctor’s appointments, visit loved ones, or just step out into the fresh air again.

But we can’t do it without more helping hands!

And here’s the big news:
You don’t have to be a Civitan member to volunteer.
You just have to care. That’s it.

Referrals come in from the CarolinaEast Foundation, Hospice, and area churches. Then our ramp coordinator, Van Allen Rice, gets to work — assessing the site, planning the design, and coordinating the build. Van is a whiz with a tape measure, but he can’t do it alone.

We’ve got a loyal group of volunteers who brave the heat, the chilly air, the early mornings, and the occasional long drive — but the need keeps growing. And that’s why we need you.

Yes, YOU — with a toolbox or even just two willing hands.
Yes, YOU — even if you’ve never built a thing in your life.
Yes, YOU — no membership required.

Every ramp has a story. Some come with tears. Others with high-fives. All come with deep, heartfelt gratitude from people who suddenly feel free again because they can leave their house.

Want to help? Helping with one ramp build or a few a year makes a difference.

Email Club President Roy Leonard or Ramp Chair Van Rice to get started.

Want to help but can’t build? You can donate directly to our handicap ramp supplies fund — every dollar goes straight to materials.

To our amazing ramp crew: we see your hard work, and we appreciate it more than you know. Every single one of you is a hero.

Now let’s grow this team.
Come build hope with us!
